Setting Sail: The Next Chapter for Lake Guntersville Junior Sailing

Welcome to Heron's Watch.

For more than 13 years, young people from across the Tennessee Valley have been coming to Lake Guntersville to learn how to sail. What started as a small, grassroots effort led by Captain Kelvin Troughton grew into something much bigger than anyone expected. Under Troughton’s guidance, more than 250 young sailors have spent time on the water learning not only how to handle a boat, but also how to work as a team, solve problems, gain confidence, and push themselves beyond what they thought they could do.

Many of us have seen it happen firsthand. A nervous first-day camper becomes comfortable at the helm. Friendships form between kids who had never met before. Sailors begin encouraging one another, helping each other rig boats, and celebrating one another's successes. Somewhere between launching boats and coming back to shore, something bigger than sailing begins to happen.

Now we are excited to begin a new chapter as Lake Guntersville Junior Sailing, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding youth sailing opportunities in our community and throughout the Tennessee Valley.

Our goal is simple: give more young people the chance to experience the water. For some, that may mean learning the basics for the first time. For others, it may mean developing racing skills and representing our region in competition throughout the Southeast.

As we continue growing, we are working to build a strong foundation that will allow the program to serve future sailors for years to come. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are excited about what is on the horizon.

This space will be where we share race updates, sailor stories, program news, photos from the water, and the many moments that make this community special.

We're glad you're here and excited to have you along for the journey.

Fair winds,

Lake Guntersville Junior Sailing
