Hampton Cove Herons
Open Skiff Sailing: Fun and Fast for Young Sailors
-

Start Here: Lake Hauns Junior Sailing Camp
The Lake Hauns Junior Sailing Summer Program is a free, week-long sail camp designed especially for Hampton Cove Middle School students who want to learn the basics of sailing in a fun, supportive environment. Campers gain hands-on experience through daily lessons on boating safety, sail theory, and maneuvers like tacking, reaching, and running. With capsize drills and practice races on a marked course, students quickly build confidence and skill on the water. By week’s end, they’re sailing independently and competitively—discovering that sailing is not just a sport, but a journey that fosters problem-solving, focus, and even a practical appreciation for geometry.

Open Skiffs: "Bailing is Canceled"
Open Skiff sailing is a dynamic and exciting way for young people to experience the thrill of high-performance sailing while building confidence and friendships on the water. Designed especially for youth, the Open Skiff is an ideal entry point for older kids and middle schoolers who are ready for independence but still want a fun, forgiving boat to learn in. Its open cockpit and lightweight design make it easy to handle, while its speed and responsiveness keep sailors engaged and challenged. For parents, it’s the perfect next step after beginner programs—safe, social, and endlessly fun, helping kids develop balance, focus, and a lifelong love of sailing.

Grow With Us
Our mission is to inspire a lifelong love of sailing among young adventurers in North Alabama, helping them grow in skill, confidence, and teamwork on the water. Through fun, hands-on learning and friendly competition, we empower kids to chart their own course—discovering not just how to sail, but how to lead, adapt, and thrive. Camp graduates have the opportunity to continue sailing with us through seasonal programs and local events, building on their skills and friendships year after year. Join us as we nurture a new generation of sailors ready to explore, compete, and connect across the waterways of the Southeast.
